Recommended utilities
These are free utilities I use for cleaning infected computers, and for keeping systems clean. I use them on my own systems, and I install them onto client computers if they don't already have something similar on their system. Many of these also have paid versions with more features, or take donations to help support the developers.Anti-virus
- AVG Anti-virus This is an anti-virus program which is every bit as good as the "Big Boys" (like Norton and McAfee) but doesn't have a performance hit. I use this as my anti-virus program on my own personal computers. I also install it on all my customer's computers if they do not have an up-to-date anti-virus. The free version is very good and the paid version is even better.
Anti-malware
- Malwarebytes Anti-malware This is a top drawer infection remover. There are updates for it several times a day, it is very likely that that brand new infection that made itself to home on your computer can be detected and removed by this program just as quickly as it installed itself. The infection creators of the really nasty infections typically disable or damaged this program. In that case, I boot the infected computer into Safe Mode with networking, install Malwarebytes Anti-malware, update it via the internet, and then run the program. This doesn't always work, but most of the time, it does.
Anti-spyware
- Super Antispyware This program is my other big gun. Some infections will knock out this program and allow Malwarebytes to work or vice versa. Other times, both are targeted by the infection. I also like to run this program from Safe Mode. It does a great job of removing existing infections as well as preventing new ones. An excellent anti-spyware product.
- Spybot Search & Destroy This utility has been around for many years. It detects and removes infections that other utility miss. I don't consider a computer to be "clean" from infections until I run Spybot and it tells me it's clean.
Misc. utilities
- Ccleaner Slim Unlike the other utilities, this program doesn't actually remove or prevent infections. It does a super job of removing temporary files and other junk files from your hard drive which means there are far fewer files that the anti-spyware programs have to scan. Additionally, there is a Tools sections that lets you easily disable programs from startup, so your computer will boot up a bit faster.
- Secunia Personal Software Inspector With dozens (or maybe even hundreds) of applications, device drivers, browser plug-ins, and other software, how can you possibly make sure that all of them are up to date? Enter Secunia Personal Software Inspector, a free utility that checks your system against its database of thousands of programs, and will let you know which ones have updates available. Not only that, but it will give you a link to the manufacturer's web page to download the update.
